What Does It Mean When a Company Asks You to Write Creative Writing Samples?

A while back, I got a strange request from an agency. They asked me to write some creative writing samples – but not for any particular industry. They just wanted some filler text for a few webpages.

I debated for a while whether or not I should comply. After all, I don’t do well with contracts, especially when they ask me to commit to delivering a set number of texts within a set time frame. However, I figured, what the hell. I’ve got nothing to lose. I’m not going to let this opportunity pass me by. So I sat down, closed my eyes, and started typing.

What followed was one of the most bizarre writing sessions I’ve ever had. First, they started out fine. They gave me the general idea of what they wanted, and I went to work. I was even a little proud of myself. I mean, it wasn’t easy, but I was sure I was getting it right. Then, suddenly, everything changed. Their feedback loop became totally disconnected from mine. They would tell me to write a specific line, and I would obey. But a few minutes later, they would contradict themselves, and I would have to start all over again. It was incredibly frustrating. I eventually realized that I’m not the only one who gets paid to write. For some reason, they thought that I would be able to contribute a unique voice to their website. But their idea of unique probably didn’t match up with my idea of unique. So I politely declined the offer.

Is It Even Possible to Write Creative Writing Samples For Fun & Profit?

Yes, it is possible to write creative writing samples for fun and profit. You just have to know where to look. One of my favorite platforms for finding freelance writing gigs is Elance-o-matix.

This is an ‘on demand’ workforce platform that connects freelancers with clients who need quality content at short notice. It was specifically designed for freelancers who want to monetize their skills, as it offers a marketplace where clients can find various content creators, copywriters, and editors.

This is a great place to get started if you are looking for freelance writing gigs that pay good money. You can register, connect with potential clients, and begin making money quickly.

How Do You Feel About Freelancing?

I’ve been writing and designing content for digital marketplaces for over a decade. So, I have experience to draw upon. I’ve also worked in various capacities for a marketing agency, so I have knowledge about marketing and communications strategies. This gave me the confidence to feel comfortable presenting my ideas to others in a professional manner.

For the most part, I love what I do. Sure, there are days when I feel frustrated or unproductive. But then I remind myself that this is a flexible job that allows me to be creative and productive when I want to be. Plus, there’s always the possibility of growing my brand, securing new clients, and gaining new skills.

I think that, as a whole, freelancing is a great way to make money, build a brand, and gain flexibility. It’s also one of the more passive revenue streams you can generate. So, if you’re looking for ways to make money in 2020, you can’t go wrong with freelancing.
