You’ve been accepted into a Bachelors in English Lit and Creative Writing (or “Bachelors in English and Creative Writing” for short). Congrats! Now what should you do with your degree? Where should you go for your first job? How should you prepare for your future career? We’re constantly being asked these questions by friends and family members, and for most students, graduation from a top-notch university is followed by a period of self-doubt and uncertainty. The purpose of this article is to help eliminate some of this uncertainty by providing information about what classes to take, where to look for jobs, and how to prepare for the job search.
Classes to Take
One of the first things you’ll need to do after receiving your degree is to figure out what classes you should take to be able to enter the job market. The sad truth is that many students graduate with a vague idea of what classes they should take, or they haven’t given it much thought at all. To ensure you graduate with the right skills, you need to be sure you’re taking the classes necessary to satisfy the requirements of your major department. Additionally, you need to make sure you’re taking the classes that will prepare you for the job market. The following are a few suggestions for classes to take as part of your curriculum.
English 101
English 101 is an introduction to English literature and language, commonly referred to as “English 101” or “Literature and Language” for short. The purpose of this course is to get you familiar with standard English vocabulary, grammar, and spelling. Additionally, you’ll learn about various genres of English literature, including realistic fiction, non-fiction, and plays. By the end of English 101, you’ll have a good understanding of what English Lit is and what it means to study literature in English.
If you’re looking for a job in publishing, marketing, or editorial, then you’ll need to make sure you have at least 1 or 2 years of English experience. This class might also be a nice pre-interview for prospective employers, so make sure you get a good grade in English 103 if you’re applying for a job in English or Creative Writing. Alternatively, if you’re applying for a job in sales or public relations, then English 101 might not be necessary. However, you should still take it because it’s a good idea to have a good command of standard English on your resume’ anyway.
English Composition
English composition is the course that teaches you how to write effectively and how to do research for your essays. Many students get this class, often referred to as “English 102” or “Composition 101”, as part of their curriculum. Like English 101, English composition 101 focuses on grammar and writing concepts. Additionally, this class might also require you to do some research for your papers. If you’re looking for a job in publishing, marketing, or editorial, then you’ll need to make sure you have at least 2 or 3 years of English experience. If you’re looking for a job in sales or public relations, then English composition 101 isn’t as necessary, but you should still take it because it’s a good idea to have a good grasp of English grammar and writing concepts. Additionally, you don’t want to sound like a fool in an interview because you didn’t know how to correctly use “they’re” and “their”.
Advertising & Marketing
Advertising & Marketing is actually a class offered by the School of Public Relations and Communication Studies. This class is designed for students who want to enter the field of marketing or advertising. One of the things this class covers is how to write advertising copy, proposals, and a lot more. If you’re looking for a job in marketing or advertising, then make sure you get a good grade in Advertising 101 if you’re applying for a job in marketing. Alternatively, if you’re applying for a job in sales or public relations, then you might not need to take this class, but it’s still a good idea to take it because it teaches you how to write effective advertising material. Additionally, you don’t want to sound like a fool in an interview because you didn’t know how to correctly use “they’re” and “their” when referring to products or services.
Modern Foreign Languages
If you’re applying for a job in International Development or as a teacher, then you’ll need to make sure you have at least 2 years of experience in a modern foreign language. If you’re not sure which modern foreign language to study, then consider something spoken globally, such as Spanish, French, or German. Learning a common language is a great start, but even more effective is being able to communicate with people from other cultures. If you’re looking for a job in International Development, then make sure you study Spanish because a lot of the work involves communicating with people from other countries and cultures. Even if you’re not applying for a job in International Development, you should still study Spanish because it will help you communicate with people from all walks of life. Additionally, if you’re applying for a job as a teacher, then make sure you have at least 2 years of experience in teaching a foreign language. If you’re not sure which modern foreign language to study, then consider a language spoken around the world such as Spanish, French, or German. Creative writing is all about using your feelings, observations, and imagination to produce something original and engaging. If you don’t have any experience in creative writing, then consider taking a class in creative writing. Even if you aren’t looking for a job in sales or public relations, it’s still a good idea to study creative writing because it teaches you how to write creatively. In addition, if you’re looking for a job in marketing or editorial, then make sure you have at least 2 or 3 years of experience in marketing or editorial. These are just a few of the classes you might want to consider taking as part of your Bachelors in English Lit and Creative Writing curriculum.
