People often tell me that my writing is beautiful and inspiring, but I don’t always believe them. There are times when I’ve had a really rough day and I just want to write something that makes me feel better. But there are also other times when I want to write something creative that will inspire others. How do I know what kind of writing will help me and what will just make me feel better?
When you’re in a rut, it can be hard to know what will help you get out of it. Many times, I find that listening to music can help me get into the right headspace to write. So, if you’re looking for ways to improve your writing, try listening to music!
Short Stories for Short Days
Writing a short story doesn’t have to be hard. All you need is a pen, some paper, and a lot of time. I typically like to start by brainstorming ideas for short stories. I then narrow my ideas to a select few and follow up with the characters and setting. Once I have a good feel for the story, I’ll block out a few hours and sit down to write. Short stories can be a great way to improve your writing. You don’t need to write a novel in order to write a good short story. You just need to write enough to make it interesting, but not so much that it drags on. You can write a short story in one sitting, but it takes time to edit and polish it. Short stories are a great tool for building your writing skills. They help you practice making interesting twists and turns, using language effectively, and keeping your stories moving at a good pace. I highly recommend them!
A Genre to Explore
I’m always looking for new genres to explore and short stories are one of the genres I’ve been noticing more and more lately. I think it’s because I can explore the genre without committing to writing an entire book. I can write a few chapters and then set them aside, knowing that I’ll be able to pick up where I left off, in the future. This is a great option for anyone who wants to try out a new genre but doesn’t want to commit to writing a whole book. Writing short stories is a great way to explore new genres and see what works and what doesn’t work, in a short amount of time. You can’t write a bad short story, as there’s no book to lose, except for the one you write, but the process of trying out a new genre is something that will enrich your writing, regardless of whether you keep it or not. Short stories are a genre you can experiment with and see how it changes the way you write, otherwise!
Make It Personal
I think one of the reasons that I like short stories so much is because they allow me to explore the characters’ inner lives. In an extended work, you have room to explore the external aspects of a character’s life, such as where they work and who their friends are, but in a short story, you don’t always have that luxury. That’s why, when I write a short story, I like to focus on their innermost thoughts and feelings. That’s a lot easier to do in a short story and a lot less overwhelming in an extended work. Short stories allow me to see how the characters interact with one another, without all the other aspects getting in the way. It’s a great way to explore a character’s journey and what makes them tick. You can bring a character to life and make them realistic and relatable, by exploring their thoughts, feelings, and actions, in the present day. If you add all the right details, a character might even seem like they’re talking to you, as the reader. That’s what makes short stories so special. It’s like having a private conversation with a character, without all the extra cliches that come with a story. It allows you to see how the characters react to the situations they’re faced with, in ways you wouldn’t normally get to explore in an extended work. Maybe the most important thing about short stories, is that they allow you to make it personal. It takes a lot of research and practice to be able to pull that off in an extended work, so that your readers can relate to your characters, but in a short story, you only have a few pages, so that you can make it personal, right from the start. The ending of a short story is always a great place to let the dominoes fall. You can add drama, suspense, and a lot of heartache, before deciding to pull the trigger and end the manuscript. Short stories are a great way to explore the dark side of writing, while still being able to look at the bright side.
