The University of Oklahoma’s MFA in Creative Writing is now accepting applications for its fall 2021 semester. The deadline to apply is March 15, 2021.
This graduate degree program is designed for students who already have a BA in English, Creative Writing, or Literature. The requirement for English majors is to complete a Bachelor of Arts with a 3.0 GPA. Students should also have at least four years of college completed. Those with a less than three years of college completed may take part in the WRAP program (work-related activity program).
Overview
The MFA in Creative Writing at Oklahoma State University is a 48-credit hour program that is intended to assist students in developing the skills needed to become successful fiction writers. The goal of the program is to produce students who can both critically analyze and creatively write about complex issues. Students enrolled in the program will take part in an intense eight-week course load consisting of five classes each week. In addition, students will complete a thesis or research project in either fiction or creative nonfiction that will culminate in a 60-page paper.
The Non-Fiction Track
Students who enroll in the non-fiction track will take an eight-week fiction writing course and will participate in an additional five-week course on research and thesis writing. In addition, they will complete a 48-credit hour program in non-fiction that focuses on the craft of writing and the elements of research. The final project in this program will be a 30-40 page research paper or thesis.
The Fiction Track
Students who enroll in the fiction track will also take an eight-week fiction writing course followed by a five-week research and thesis course. In addition, they will complete a 48-credit hour program in fiction that combines the critical analysis of non-fiction with the objective of developing creative writing skills. The final project in this program will be a 60-page paper or novel.
