How Long Should You Wait for an MFA in Creative Writing?

If you’re looking to pursue a Master of Fine Arts in Creative Writing, you’ll soon find that the field is highly competitive. Just having the degree isn’t enough anymore; you’ll need to stand out from the pack with a strong application, including lots of exceptional writing samples. But how long should you wait before applying? There’s no fixed answer to this question, as it largely depends on what you want to do after you graduate.

Writing Is Back

In the past, if you were fortunate enough to be a skilled writer, you could get a publishing contract immediately following graduation. But these days, the field is much more competitive, and getting into a professional writers’ group or submitting your work to publishing houses is no longer an option for most grads.

Instead, aspiring writers must find a way to build their portfolio, which usually entails getting their material out there for others to read, either through social media or self-publishing platforms. And if you’ve got a strong enough portfolio, you might even be able to get a paid writing internship or job.

The MFA Over-Promises, and the Publishing Industry Under-Delivers

It’s always pleasing to see a university fulfill its promise to provide prospective students with an excellent degree. But in the case of the MFA in Creative Writing, it’s important to keep in mind that the field is still evolving, and that even some of the biggest names have had to endure grueling application processes just to get into their program.

In an effort to stand out from the crowd, many universities have greatly increased the perceived value of their degree. While the general education requirements remain steady, creative writing instructors often boast about how their programs differ from the rest. And while a traditional publishing contract might not be on the table any longer, instructors often promise an agent or a publisher as part of the application process.

When it comes to finding a job, it’s important to look at the broader picture, rather than just the immediate employment opportunities. The more you know, the more you’ll be able to contribute to your job search. If you want to be a professional writer, it’s important to look at all the different options, including getting an MFA in Creative Writing.
