How to Make a Money System for a Fictional Writer

Hi, my name is Anissa, and I’m a professional writer for children. I love to read, especially when connected to money topics – I think it’s incredible how much a story can tell you about life. Therefore, when I was asked to create a blog post series on how to make a money system from a children’s book I immediately thought of using for my own money management. In this blog post, you’ll learn about my personal journey as a children’s author and the steps I took to create financially viable content for freelance clients. It’s definitely not the most conventional route, but it worked for me – and maybe it’ll work for you too.

The Book That Inspired This Post

When I first got the idea of doing a book on blogging for children, I was actually inspired by a real-life event. One of my regular clients is Oprah Winfrey, and she’s always encouraging me to find my courage and follow my heart. So when I was asked to write a blog post series on how to make money publishing children’s books, I immediately thought of Oprah’s advice. I wrote down her exact words when she said, “It’s not what you know, it’s who you know. It’s always going to be easier to find a way to make money if you’re connected to someone, whether it’s a celebrity, a wealthy family member, or a friend with money who can invest in your dream.” That was when I decided to base my blog post series on a fictional story. I wanted to give the series a realistic feel, so I chose to use a story about a young girl who wanted to become a children’s author. This was a story that I had already started writing, and it is one of my favorites. In the story, a young girl named Zoe wonders if she has what it takes to be a published children’s author. Through the course of the story, she comes across various challenges that she must overcome to become a successful writer.

Step One: Find Your Niche

The first step to making money with your children’s book is to figure out what niche you’ll fit into. Different genres and age groups will have different demands – and profitable – niche markets. Make a note of the top-selling kids’ books in your area and think about what sets them apart from other titles. This will help you determine how you’ll position yourself within the broader category of children’s literature. For instance, if your story is about a family of vampires, then you might want to consider adapting the story for a graphic novel or novel rather than a young adult novel. Or, if your story is about a soccer star who goes to an extreme sports summer camp and has to overcome his fear of swimming, then you could probably write an award-winning children’s book focused on his character transformation and courage development.

Step Two: Find A Way To Market The Book

Once you have your niche, it’s time to figure out how best to sell the product. The best way to do this is by finding a way to market your book. Think about the various platforms you can use to spread the word about your book. There are plenty of channels, and while marketing to children can be challenging, it’s certainly not impossible. You could begin by simply posting about the book on social media accounts – but you’ll want to do more than that. You’ll want to develop a comprehensive marketing plan, which will include things like building a website, creating social media accounts, and reaching out to bloggers and possible reviewers. It’s a good idea to network with other children’s authors to get tips on marketing your book – as well as to find out what types of content they’re using to attract potential readers. Different platforms will emphasize different marketing tactics, so it’s important to find the right mix for your own book. Once you do, you’ll be able to choose a platform and begin developing content for the book. Or, you can begin directly on the platform itself – if you’re logged in, that is.

Step Three: Create Content

Once you have a platform in place, you can begin creating content for the book. Children’s books can be a very limited market, and getting content approved by a publisher can be challenging. However, you can take advantage of the digital nomad lifestyle of our modern world and create a blog focused on children’s literature. Do your research and learn as much as you can about how to write a bestselling children’s book. And, while you’re at it, learn how to market the heck out of your blog. The sooner you can establish yourself as an authority in your industry, the better. Once you have a small audience, you can begin pitching your articles to top-tier publications. From there, you can move on to larger publications and eventually gain access to celebrity bloggers. If you want to be able to write for top-tier publications, then it’s a good idea to specialize in short-stories or poems – as these can be more easily adapted to online platforms like blogs. For instance, if you’re a poet and you want to write for a top-tier publication, then perhaps you should look into publishing your own collection of poems. Or, if you’d like to write for children, then make sure you have the necessary material to back you up. If you don’t, then it’s probably best to write for adults instead.

How To Make Money As A Freelance Writer

Once you have a small audience, it’s time to think about how you’ll make money. There are plenty of platforms designed for freelancers, and many of them can be monetized. If you have a sizable audience, then you can begin taking freelance writing jobs. The demand for quality children’s content is on the rise, and many top-tier publications will pay you well if you can provide them with articles for their websites. As a freelance writer, you’ll be responsible for finding your own clients and negotiating your own rates. However, as long as you have an audience, many clients will reach out to you.

Should You Quit Your Day Job?

Since children’s books can be a limited market, it’s important to determine whether or not you should quit your day job. If you’re passionate about writing and you’ve established yourself as an authority in your industry, then it’s not unlikely that you’ll attract a following. If this is the case, then maybe you don’t need a day job after all? Or, at least, not yet. Once you have a following, it’s time to move on to the next step.

Step Four: Monetize Your Blog

With a small audience, you can begin monetizing your blog. There are plenty of affiliate programs and free blogging platforms that can be monetized with a small number of engaged visitors. For instance, if you get 300 unique visitors per month, then you can take advantage of Amazon’s affiliate program and make a living from your blog. You’ll need to build a following and a small audience before you can begin making money from your blog. Once you have a few hundred or a thousand followers, then it’s time to move on to the next step.

Step Five: Proactively Monetize Your Blog

Just because you’ve established a monetized blog doesn’t mean that you should stop there. If you have a sizable audience, then it’s a good idea to look into proactive monetization. This will be more profitable than simply relying on affiliate marketing and sporadic blog posts. If you can figure out a way to get paid before you even put a new blog post online, then you’re in business. There are plenty of revenue sharing programs and affiliate networks that can help you monetize a blog. For example, if you’ve built a WordPress blog, then you can sign up for a free Amazon Affiliate account and begin taking advantage of all the revenue sharing opportunities WordPress provides. Alternatively, you could look into getting a lucrative gig as a ghost writer and nail down a steady stream of income before you even think about establishing yourself as a children’s author.

As you can see, it’s a lot of work to become a successful children’s author. And, although this might not be conventional, it’s certainly not impossible. With the proper research and planning, it’s certainly possible to create a sustainable financial model for a fictional writer.
