The Basics Of Telugu Writing

There are three basic parts to writing in any language: grammar, spelling, and style. Knowing how to write in Telugu will help you become a better writer in other languages as well. Let’s take a look at each part.

Grammar

All human languages have grammar. Grammar is simply the rules or patterns of a language. There are many different kinds of grammar, but all languages have grammar. In order to write well, you must know how to use the correct grammar for the language you are writing. Let’s take a look at some of the grammar rules for Telugu.

  • It is a very inflective language. This means that if you add or remove certain words from a sentence, it will still make sense. For example, in English we would say, ‘The dog ate the cat.’ This makes sense because ‘dog’ and ‘cat’ have different endings. However, in Telugu the sentence would mean the same even if you remove or add different words. For example, ‘Raja kapu ate kapu.’ Or, ‘Mani kudi ate mani.’ In these two examples, you can see how the endings of certain words change depending on the subject of the sentence. This is why it is called an inflective language.
  • It is a very versatile language. This means that if you put two words together in a different way, it does not necessarily mean that they are synonymous. Take the English word ‘versatile’. If you look at the English definition for ‘versatile’, it means: ‘able to turn or switch; capable of varied, or changing, use or application’ – Merriam-Webster
  • If you look at the word ‘versatile’ in this way, you can see how it can be used in a sentence to mean either ‘able to switch’ or ‘able to turn’ – Merriam-Webster
  • This is why the language is so important. Having a good command of the language will open up hundreds of new opportunities for you. You will not only be able to communicate with family and friends overseas, but you will also be able to do business with the native speakers. You will have the ability to ask questions, give orders, and converse with confidence.

Spelling

This refers to the way words are spelt. Some people in India call it ‘spell-checking’ or ‘grammar-checking’ because they believe that spelling and grammar should go hand-in-hand. Spelling is very important in any language. It can make or break a language’s ability to be understood. Let’s take a look at some of the rules regarding spelling in Telugu.

  • All nouns and most pronouns are spelled with a beginning capital letter. For example, ‘Biology’ is normally written as ‘biology’. However, if you are referring to God or Jesus, you write the name with a lowercase letter. The only English words that are exceptions are ‘the’, ‘and’, ‘or’, and ‘the’. For example, ‘Biography’ is normally written as ‘biography’.
  • Vowels are generally followed by a consonant letter, except for the three English words mentioned above. This is because English words are mainly made up of consonants, and vowels are used for emphasis.
  • Consonants are normally written in a manner similar to English. For example, ‘chair’ is normally written as ‘chair’. However, if you are referring to a ‘Queen’s chair’, you would write this in a different way. Think of songs, raps, and nursery rhymes. These words are often spelled in a manner that is difficult to understand. Take the English word ‘solution’. If you look at the English definition for ‘solution’, it means: ‘remedy or manner of dealing with a problem’ – Merriam-Webster
  • Try and understand the difference between these two words: ‘solution’ and ‘remedy’. In case you are not sure, ‘solution’ is the accepted answer while ‘remedy’ is the one you are actually trying to achieve. Knowing how to spell words accurately will improve your vocabulary and help you become a better writer.

Style

Style is similar to grammar in that it is another aspect of a language that makes it different from others. Some people in India believe that there are 12 basic rules that make up good style. Here are some of the style rules in Telugu:
