How to Apply for an MFA at Syracuse University’s Creative Writing Program

Syracuse University’s MFA in Creative Writing is one of the most highly regarded programs in the country, if not the world. It was founded in 1966 and has become a hub for some of the most talented and passionate writers in the industry. This year, the application process for the MFA is a little different than usual. It has become extremely competitive, and with a limited number of spots available, competition is fierce.

The Creative Writing Program offers a rigorous academic experience that encourages students to develop their critical voice and to explore the meaning of their own creative works. It is well-known for incubating some of the most exciting talents in literature, and it has been the home of such notables as William Styron, Tony Kushner, and James Runnels. Additionally, the curriculum is very individualized, and students are encouraged to explore a variety of interests and to branch out of their comfort zone.

One of the ways in which the application process for this year’s MFA has changed is that it requires students to have an affiliation with a library (either physical or digital). This is in order to ensure that the students have access to all of the necessary materials while enrolling in the program. In the past, the only requirement for admission was an essay of no more than seven pages. The change was made in response to the COVID-19 pandemic, which curtailed access to libraries and made extensive use of remote work environments. The hope is that this policy will increase access to information for all students, especially for those who might otherwise be prevented from participating due to economic concerns.
