I love learning new things. It is the key to further growth and development. Studying a foreign language is a great way to expand your horizons and give you a fresh perspective on things. In today’s world, it is essential to be able to speak multiple languages. I have always believed that learning to write in another language is beneficial due to the adaptability of the skill set. In today’s world, it is becoming commonplace for English speaking students to learn to write in another language. There are many benefits to learning to write in cursive, but here are the main reasons why I think it’s worth your while.
Better Understanding Of The Language
Each culture has its own way of writing and speaking. Learning to write in cursive will help you to familiarize yourself with this way of writing as you will be writing in the same style as your teachers. The more you write, the easier it will become and the clearer your understanding will be after a few classes. After learning to write in a cursive style, you will be able to read and understand the language better than before. With a basic knowledge of the alphabet, you will be able to look up words you don’t know the meaning of and find out what they mean. Better understanding of the language will also make you a better communicator, whether you are writing or speaking.
More Freedom Of Movement
With the world becoming more digital, it is essential to be able to write by hand as well. Having a steady hand is essential when it comes to calligraphy, and being able to write in a fluid manner will help you to create beautiful artwork. Learning to write in cursive will allow you to practice your hand coordination while also being mindful of the beautiful flow of the letters. When you are forced to use a computer for your writing, you lose out on a lot of the benefits that cursive writing has to offer.
Improved Focus
Many people are unable to focus for long periods of time when using a computer. With so much stimulation, it is easy to become distracted and lose focus. Learning to write in cursive will improve your focus as you will be learning to discipline yourself and work through problems independently. When you write things down, you are forced to deal with them independently. This forces you to focus on the task at hand and consider what is going on around you without being distracted by outside stimuli. Having a more focused mind will make you a more productive person, able to get things done and learn quicker.
Familiarization With Handwriting
There is a saying that goes something along the lines of ‘you never get used to handwriting’, and that is truly what it means. Learning to write in cursive will help you to get used to handwriting and be more comfortable with the way you write. The more you write, the more you will see differences in your handwriting from before you began. Learning to write in cursive will also help you to be more creative with your hand movements and get unique strokes and flourishes that you can add to your writing. It won’t matter if you are a professional writer or an aspiring one; being able to write in a distinctive manner will give your work an extra boost of authenticity and make it that little bit more interesting to read.
Faster Learning
One of the things that drive me crazy about college is how quickly information is forgotten. There is so much information to process each day, and with so much competition for student’s attention, it is easy for knowledge to be diluted. One way you can ensure that you do not forget important facts and figures is by writing them down. Learning to write in cursive will speed up the process of taking in and processing information as you will be writing out long paragraphs of text every day. The act of putting pen to paper or fingers to keyboard will stimulate your neurons and help you to retain what you have learned better than if you had simply listened to the information verbally. If you are spending a lot of time in classes, you will find that the more you write, the quicker you will learn and be able to retain the information that you have learned.
Writing Is Expressive
Writing is a form of art that is as unique and expressive as the person writing. Everyone has a different way of expressing themselves through written communications and learning to write in cursive will allow you to find your own voice and develop your own unique style. Whether you choose to write in a formal manner or in a more casual manner, being able to write in the way you choose is a great tool for self-expression. Having a more developed sense of style will also help you to become a more confident writer and enhance your overall creativity.
Better Comprehension
When reading text, it is often helpful to have some form of guidance or commentary to better understand what you are reading. Students who have learning disabilities often have a harder time comprehending text as it is difficult for them to make sense of what they are reading. Students with dyslexia especially find it hard to understand large amounts of text as it moves quickly past them. Adding extra visual aids, such as underlining words or phrases, can really help with comprehension as it allows the student with dyslexia to focus on the task at hand and not be distracted by other elements around them. Having visual aids will also allow them to follow the flow of the text and make sense of what they are reading. If you are able to write comments or highlight important points as you go along, it will be much simpler to comprehend what you are reading as you will be able to follow the flow of the text while also making notes about what you have read. Better comprehension will also make you a better communicator, whether you are writing or speaking.
One of the things that make cursive writing so special is that it does not need to be perfect. We are often so focused on trying to make our writing look like what we see on social media that we lose sight of the fact that it does not need to be perfect. There are so many times when my cursive writing does not measure up to what I see online, and that is exactly what makes it so special; it is a completely different style of writing. We should not be so focused on how things look that we forget about how they should feel and what they mean. Learning to write in an authentic and unique manner will help you to find your voice and be proud of what you write, no matter what anyone else thinks. We should all be able to find the skills to express ourselves in the way we choose, and that is what makes this world a truly beautiful place.
